Your Knowledge Is Your Greatest Asset
As we close out the year, I’ve been thinking about the most valuable piece of equipment in my bridal alterations business.
It’s not my sewing machine. It’s not my pressing tools. It’s not even my Bernina Industrial 950. But I do love that baby!
It’s my brain—my mental toolbox.
Your Brain Is Your Equipment
I like to envision my brain as my toolbox. The more I learn, the more tools I have available. I feel more confident as I approach each bridal fitting knowing that I’ve learned many different approaches to altering a gown.
I certainly have my favorite techniques. But there is such a variety of designs and infinite body shapes that I need all the knowledge I can put into my brain to make the best fitting decisions.

Training is vital to any career—especially one as specialized as bridal alterations.
You Don’t Know – What You Don’t Know
I consistently hear feedback from my Academy students that surprises me—and reinforces this message. Most tell me they’re amazed at how much they learned, even though they considered themselves experienced seamstresses before starting.
Bridal alterations are unique. Fitting issues can be funky. The techniques that work on regular garments often fail on wedding gowns.
One student shared that she’d been trained in a bridal shop by an experienced seamstress who had worked there for years. After completing the Academy, she told me she hadn’t learned any of this specialized knowledge from her store trainer—and wondered if her old trainer could also benefit from taking my courses!
That’s the reality: even experienced professionals have knowledge gaps they don’t realize exist.
The Best Investment You Can Make
As this year comes to a close, I want to encourage you to invest in yourself.
You are the most vital part of your business. Your knowledge—or lack of knowledge—can make or break your career success.
We all need three key skill sets to thrive:
Sewing skills – the technical foundation
Customer relations skills – building trust with brides
Business management skills – creating sustainable income
But it all starts with mastering the specialized techniques that set you apart.
Start Your New Year Right
Speaking of investing in your skills, I’m thrilled to invite you to my Sleeve Excellence Symposium in January 2026!
Brides are requesting sleeves more than ever, and many seamstresses are frustrated or turning away this lucrative work because they don’t understand the specialized techniques required.
This intensive training will transform how you approach sleeves—from understanding armscye dynamics to creating perfect fit with optimum arm movement. You’ll master everything from adding cap sleeves to complete sleeve restructuring.
This is your path to sleeve alteration genius!
The Sleeve Excellence Symposium is the perfect way to invest in yourself as we start the new year. Add this valuable tool to your mental toolbox and watch your confidence (and income opportunities) grow.
Wishing You a Wonderful December
As you celebrate this holiday season, I hope you’ll take a moment to appreciate how far you’ve come in your sewing journey—and dream about where continued learning could take you in 2026.
Here’s to upgrading our mental equipment and becoming even more skilled in the year ahead!
With gratitude and excitement for what’s coming,
