The basic sewing room essentials for a Bridal Alterations Specialist are:

  1. Very dependable sewing machine.  I would recommend an industrial sewing machine. Bridal alterations have serious deadlines. Breakdowns with machinery can cause you so much stress. On this same note, it is so important to give regular maintenance to your machines. They are part of your livelihood. Take good care of your equipment.
  2. A serger that does roll hems
  3. Iron and board. This is a must.
  4. Sturdy Hooks on the walls for dresses. These should be screwed in through a stud, not just sheetrock.  Some of these dresses are heavy!!!
  5. A large clean table to spread out your work.
  6. Razors and un-pickers
  7. Scissors
  8. Pins. I prefer the long yellow headed pins.
  9. Tape measures and a seam gauge.
  10. Dress form.

There are some wonderful non essentials that are great to have if possible:

  1. Chains or hooks from the ceiling to hang dresses by your machines and cutting table.

  2.  A comfortable office chair on wheels.

  3. Space to move.

I think sometimes we overfill our sewing rooms with too much stuff and end up with no room to move. This can also make you feel overwhelmed. Sometimes, less is more. Before you buy, think about whether you have room for more equipment. It may not be worth the space it takes up.  Some of us have the luxury of plenty of space, some of us choose to have less space. I have recently moved into a much smaller space. I love having less. I’m a minimalist at heart. I have had to do some downsizing in my sewing room and consider what is worth keeping, and what do I really use. I’m still in the process of getting rid of stuff. This is hard, I’m not going to lie. But it helps me ponder the word “essential”.

What items do you consider to be essential to your studio? Let me know.

Have a great week.
