Oh yeah, it’s that time of year! Brides want black. A little black, a lot black, anywhere in-between black. They need black!

While most people think October brides are all about autumn colors and pumpkin spice everything, I usually have at least one bride who wants black.

Why October Brides Are Choosing Black

Black wedding dresses are becoming increasingly popular among brides-to-be who want to break away from traditional wedding norms and make their special day truly reflect their personalities and values. Here’s what I’m seeing:

The Halloween Lovers: These brides aren’t just getting married in October by coincidence—they’re embracing the season’s dramatic, mysterious energy. They want their wedding dress to reflect their love for all things spooky and sophisticated.

The Goth Goddesses: These dresses embody a sense of mystery, romance, and sophistication, making them a popular choice for brides who want to break away from the norm. These brides have been wearing black their whole lives—why would their wedding day be any different?

The Rebels: For many brides, wearing a black wedding dress is about expressing their personal style. It’s a bold, non-traditional choice that reflects individuality. They’re not trying to shock anyone—they simply refuse to wear a color that doesn’t feel like “them.”

The Confident Fashionistas: Some brides just know they look incredible in black. Many brides find darker colors to be more flattering. In fact, black is often considered a very visually slimming color.

The Alteration Challenge

Here’s what most people don’t realize: black wedding dresses stain your machinery. You have to do a complete and total wipe down of every surface and clear out every piece of dark lint. I do bridal exclusively to prevent most of this kind of work. But there’s no way I’m going to turn down a black wedding dress. They are so fun, and I usually really enjoy the brides.

October’s Black Dress Trends I’m Seeing:

Gothic Romance

Featuring ornate lace, corset bodices, and cascading tulle, wedding dress black ideas evoke an air of mystery and romance.

Modern Minimalist

Sleek, structured black gowns that are all about clean lines and perfect fit

Dramatic Details

Accessories like a black veil, black lace gloves, chokers are all so popular.

The beautiful thing about these October brides? They know exactly what they want, they’re not afraid to invest in quality work, and they understand that their unique vision requires specialized expertise.

October is the perfect reminder of why this niche is so lucrative. These bold brides don’t just want alterations—they need an expert who can handle luxury, non-traditional gowns with the specialized techniques they demand. You are just the person they are looking for.

What’s your experience with non-traditional wedding dresses? Have you seen more requests for black gowns lately? I’d love to hear your October stories.
